A healthy diet for a happy life
We all know a good diet is vital to keep us in the best of health. Not only does it make us feel well, it also reduces our risk of developing many conditions such as heart disease, cancer, constipation, obesity and tooth decay. However, we want to enjoy what we eat and not feel we can't have our favourite foods when we fancy them. Eating healthily means choosing a variety of foods. It doesn't mean giving up any of the foods you like, but perhaps eating them less often and in smaller amounts. Food provides the nutrients that help the body function properly. No one food contains everything we need, so eating a mixture of food types is important to make sure we get enough vitamins and minerals. This means eating more of some food types than others.
The five main food groups
  • Carbohydrates
  • Protein from meat and fish
  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Dairy products
  • Fatty and sugary foods

These should make up the main part of your meals. They include foods such as bread, breakfast cereals, pasta, potatoes and rice. This is where we get most of our fibre or 'roughage'. They keep the digestive system working efficiently and prevent problems such as constipation.
Useful Tips: How to boost your fibre intake
  • Have at least four slices of bread a day, preferably wholemeal.
  • Try having bigger portions of pasta or rice with less sauce.
  • Eat more potatoes, especially those cooked without fat.
  • Have cereal for breakfast each morning. Opt for something not coated in sugar or honey, such as museli or corn flakes.
  • Eat plenty of pasta with tomato-based sauces, rather than cream or cheese ones.
  • Cook beans. All beans are a rich source of fibre - try topping a jacket potato with baked beans, but don't add butter!
