Sugar makes food taste good, but unfortunately it's also the major cause of tooth decay. This is especially true when sugary foods and drinks are eaten throughout the day, so try to limit them to mealtimes only. Did you know that sugar only contains calories, with NO other nutrients? We don't even need sugar for energy - we get enough from the other food we eat. Because of its high calorie content, too much sugar can make you fat. If you are overweight cutting back on sugar is one of the easiest ways to cut calories without losing nutrients. Many sugary foods are also high in fat such as chocolate and cakes. Check food ingredients for hidden sugar: sucrose, glucose, dextrose, fructose, maltose, honey and syrup are all forms of sugar.


5 Simple ways to cut down on Sugar
  • Choose low-calorie soft drinks.
  • Get used to drinking tea and coffee without sugar - try cutting down a little at a time.
  • Try halving the sugar you use in recipes. It works for most things except jam and meringues.
  • Spread jam, marmalade and honey more thinly on bread and toast.
  • Choose cereals that aren't coated with sugar.

When you eat sugary food it starts off a reaction in your mouth. Bacteria in the plaque on your teeth use sugar to produce an acid that attacks tooth enamel. Although teeth can cope with some acid attack, constant bombardment with sweet foods will ultimately cause decay.

Believe it or not we eat on average about 9 grams of salt a day, most of which has been added by food manufacturers during processing. The rest we add at home during cooking or at the table. Only a small amount is naturally present in food. We do need some salt in out diets, but most of us eat far more than we need. Eating too much salt can lead to high blood pressure that in turn can cause heart disease, kidney disease and strokes. To stay healthy we should therefore try to reduce our salt intake. SALT REDUCERS
  • Use less salt when cooking.
  • Always taste food before you add salt. Try to get out of the habit of automatically putting salt onto food.
  • Try herbs, spices, or lemon juice to flavour foods instead.
  • Reduce the amount of salty snacks you eat, such as crisps and salted nuts.
  • Cut down on salted meats such as bacon and gammon.
  • Check food labels for salt content.
Useful Tips
Stock cubes contain a lot of salt so try making your own stock instead by boiling vegetables or meat in water.
